A field investigation was carried out to study the impact of shrimp culture on crop, livestock and poultry production in the south western coastal region of Bangladesh. Data were collected from six upazila of three districts. Selected upazila were Rampal and Mongla of Bagerhat, Batiaghata and Dacope of Khulna and Shyamnagar and Assasuni of Satkhira district. Data were collected using a pre tested questionnaire by direct interview of the farm owners. The results revealed that majority of the farmers ( 32.0%) had SSC level of education. Maximum percentage (47.1%) of farmers belonged large sized family (7 or above) and minimum percentage (12.7%) belonged small sized family. Before introduction of shrimp culture most of the farmers ( 72.9%) had a lower level of income. But after introduction of shrimp culture higher percentage ( 53.3%0 had medium level of income. Number of cattle declined remarkably after starting shrimp culture. Milk yield of cows and their lactation period also decreased after introduction of shrimp culture. Grazing of cattle also decreased markedly. Average numbers of chicken per family were 11.69 and 6.60 before and after shrimp culture, respectively. The majority of the respondents (50.9%) had small sized land (0.50-2.49 acres) as compared to 29.1% landless (0.00 – 0.49 acres) and 19.1% had medium sized land (2.50-7.49 acres) respectively before shrimp culture. But the majority of the respondents (45.3%) had medium sized land (2.50-7.49 acres) as compared to 38.7% small sized land (0.50-2.49 acres) and 14.2 % had landless respectively after shrimp culture. The income and living standard of shrimp farm owners have improved but crop, live stock and poultry production of coastal region hampered greatly for the unplanned expansion of shrimp culture.
